Create a GoPC-ready bootable CD-ROM or USB drive

Answer

Create a GoPC-ready bootable CD-ROM or USB drive

GoPC have created a customized Knoppix linux iso file that can be installed onto a CD-ROM or USB drive. Booting a PC with either provides a Linux desktop preconfigured with the GoPC client and other applications.

How to create a bootable GoPC-ready CD-ROM

This procedure requires a blank CD-R, a PC with a CD writer and CD writing software

Download the GoPC bootable Linux ISO file (md5 sum 61f05b080a0a63e3c8a2c271ee7a099e) to a temporary folder on your local PC

Note: The file is approximately 550B so it may take a while to download

Once it has downloaded, right-click on the iso file and you should get the option to burn it to CD.

Reboot your PC and set your system BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the CD device first, save your changes and reboot

After rebooting your PC, it should boot the GoPC linux Desktop from your CD-ROM.  When the USB drive has finished booting, the desktop below should appear.

How to create a GoPC-ready bootable USB drive

Obtain a USB drive at least 1GB in size

Download the GoPC bootable Linux ISO file to a temporary folder on your local PC

Download the  Universal USB Installer to the same location

Click on the Universal-USB-Installer icon below

The message below will then appear. Click on Run.

Click on I Agree to agree to the license agreement.

The menu below will appear.

Select KNOPPIX V6.2 from the dropdown list as shown below

The custom GoPC Knoppix ISO should be found automatically as shown below

Select the driver letter of the USB drive you want to make bootable. The USB drive must be formatted as Fat or Fat32 to be bootable. Installing to a USB drive formatted with NTFS will not work. If you choose to format the USB drive any data on it will be lost. In our example below we have chosen to format the drive.  Click on the Create button to start installing to the USB drive.

The installer process starts as shown below.

A new window will open as the contents of the ISO are extracted. That will take a few minutes.

Once the contents of the ISO are extracted, the files are then installed to the USB drive.

When the USB Installer has finished click on the close button. You now have a GoPC ready bootable USB drive

Reboot your PC and set your system BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the USB device first, save your changes and reboot

After rebooting your PC, it should boot the GoPC linux OS from your USB drive.  When the USB drive has finished booting, the desktop below should appear.
